In the site configuration, allow users to upload an image to be used as a default if there is no individual profile picture loaded for a player.
For example:
A further step could be to make several options:
Default Pic uploaded by user
Club logo of current (or last) club
No picture

In the meantime, I added a default blank portrait image to every player page. It was very easy to do.
